History

Founded in 1988 by visionary philanthropist Alhaj Dr. B. S. Abdur Rahman Sahib under the aegis of the Seethakathi Trust, Chennai, Thassim Beevi Abdul Kader College for Women was established to address the critical need for higher education among women in the industrially backward region of Kilakarai. Named in memory of Mrs. Thassim Beevi and her husband Janab Abdul Kader, the institution began its journey with just 65 students and 11 staff members.

Over nearly four decades, the college has evolved into a premier autonomous institution, breaking socio-economic barriers and empowering thousands of first-generation learners and minority women to achieve academic and professional distinction.

Chronological History

1. Foundation and Inception (1988)

Thassim Beevi Abdul Kader College for Women was established on July 28, 1988, in Kilakarai, Ramanathapuram District, Tamil Nadu, under the sponsorship of the Seethakathi Trust, Chennai. The college was established to address the educational needs of women in the region, particularly those from minority and economically backward backgrounds. Operations commenced with 65 students, 11 faculty members, and 3 academic departments — Commerce, Computer Science, and Home Science.

2. Statutory Recognition & Academic Autonomy (1991–2005)

1991: Included under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act.
2002: University affiliation transferred to Alagappa University, Karaikudi.
2005: Official conferment of Autonomous Status by the UGC, granting full academic independence.

3. Research, Incubation & Institutional Growth (2008–2018)

2008: Recognized as a Minority Educational Institution by NCMEI, Govt. of India.
2018: Formed the Thassim Beevi Innovation Incubation Council (TBIIC) under MHRD initiatives.
2020: Granted a patent for a UGC major research project outcome: Nutritionally Enriched Seaweed Chocolate.

NAAC Benchmark: Accredited with an 'A' Grade (CGPA 3.16).
DBT Star Status: Recognized under the DBT Star College Scheme by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
National Publication: Flagship practice "Classroom without Walls: Blended Education Through MOOCs" included in the Ministry of Education's 101 Best Practices book (2026).

College inaugurated by Alhaj Dr B S Abdur Rahman & Mrs Muthu Zulaikha Abdur Rahman. Started with three departments — Commerce, Computer Science, and Home Science — with 65 students and 11 faculty members.

17 October 1989

Application submitted to Madurai Kamaraj University for affiliation of B.A. English Literature programme.

1990

21 January 1990

Further affiliation granted for B.A. English Literature and the programme officially commenced.

1991

07 November 1991

College included under UGC Section 2(f) and 12(B), becoming eligible for central assistance and grants.

1992

19 April 1992

First Graduation Day conducted with Justice Fathima Beevi delivering the inaugural graduation address.

1993

15 July 1993

M.Com programme introduced as the college's first postgraduate course. Pearl Montessori Nursery & Primary School was also inaugurated.

1994

15 July 1994

Further affiliation granted for MCA Degree Programme and PGDCA programme introduced.

1995

20 December 1995

First Alumnae Association inaugurated by Correspondent Dr. Rahmathunnisa Abdur Rahman.

1996

26 June 1996

UGC sanctioned ₹17 lakhs for vocational education and introduction of Computer Applications in Home Science.

1998

22 August 1998

Decennium celebrations held with the visit of Her Excellency Ms. Fathima Beevi, Governor of Tamil Nadu.

1999

09 October 1999

New programmes introduced including M.Sc. Food Service Management & Dietetics, M.A. English, B.Sc. Mathematics, and B.A. Arabic Literature.

2000

11 April 2000

Permission granted to convert B.Sc. Computer Science into B.Sc. Information Technology.

2001

12 September 2001

UGC granted postgraduate development assistance for Home Science, Computer Science, and Commerce departments.

2002

28–30 August 2002

NAAC Peer Team visited the college and awarded B+ Grade. Affiliation transferred from Madurai Kamaraj University to Alagappa University.

2003

23 October 2003

Proposal for conferment of Autonomous Status submitted to UGC, New Delhi.

2004

10 December 2004

UGC Autonomous Committee visited the institution for conferment of autonomy.

2005

24 January 2005

UGC officially conferred Autonomous Status. New programmes introduced including M.Sc. Mathematics, B.A. Tamil, B.Sc. Chemistry, and B.Sc. Microbiology.

2006

2005–06

Institution expanded to 9 UG programmes, 5 PG programmes, and 21 value-added courses with over 1150 students.

2007

22 December 2007

Students secured placements in Infosys and TCS through campus recruitment initiatives.

2008

29 August 2008

College declared a Minority Educational Institution by the National Minority Educational Institutions Commission, Government of India.

2009

21 January 2009

UGC sanctioned ₹20 lakhs under the Basic Scientific Research scheme for autonomous colleges.

Seethakathi NGO (Est. 2002): Operates under Seethakathi Trust, directing 888 Self-Help Groups (SHGs) engaging in seashell/seaweed collection, palm crafts, chilli cultivation, net making, charcoal preparation, and food processing.

Social & Ecological Wings: Active student involvement via NSS, YRC, RRC, ECO Club, Rotaract, and Women Empowerment Cell conducting Swachh Bharat campaigns, health/HIV awareness, and tree plantation drives.

Skill Development Collaborations: Partnered with Gandhigram Rural Institute, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, NCDC Chennai, and TN Agricultural Department for fisherfolk and youth training.
