Our Story
From 10 students in a single Home Science programme to a full Research Centre in Nutrition and Dietetics — over three decades of empowering rural and urban women.
The Department was established in the year 1988 with an aim to make students potent to socio-cultural and economic environments affecting dietary and nutritional status of rural and urban communities, and to enhance self-employment capability through entrepreneurial skill training and innovative nutritional programmes. The Undergraduate programme B.Sc. General – Home Science, the first UG programme, started in 1988 with 4 faculty members, 2 lab assistants and 10 students. Today, the department has a strength of 14 faculty members, 3 lab assistants and 279 students studying UG, PG, M.Phil. and Ph.D. In 1992, the department added B.Sc. Food Service Management and Dietetics, and the general Home Science degree was renamed B.Sc. Home Science with Computer Application in 1995–96 under a UGC-sponsored vocationalisation scheme.
The department introduced its PG programme, M.Sc. Home Science Food Service Management and Dietetics, in 1999. In 2004–05 the institution achieved "Autonomous" status, and the PG programme was renamed M.Sc. Home Science Nutrition and Dietetics in 2010–11. The department was later upgraded to a Research Centre under Alagappa University, Karaikudi in 2010, offering M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Food and Nutrition through part-time and full-time programmes. During 2014–2015, B.Sc. Food Processing and Quality Control and B.Sc. Home Science – Textile and Interior Designing were introduced.
In 2019, the undergraduate programmes were renamed: B.Sc. Home Science – FSM&D became B.Sc. Nutrition and Dietetics, and B.Sc. Home Science – Textile and Interior Designing became B.Sc. Fashion Designing. The department itself was renamed the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics and Research Centre in 2023. It also offers Value Added Programmes in Food Processing and Preservation, Clinical Dietetics, and Yoga for Holistic Health, and has held the Indian Dietetics Association, Kilakarai Chapter, since 4th December 2003. Faculty members have received funding from UGC, Agricultural Marketing and Agri Business – National Mission on Food Processing, EDII-TN (IVP) and TNSCST, hold two research patents, and maintain 9 active MoUs with reputed institutions.
The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics and Research Centre has taken up the challenge of the nation since its inception, building programmes oriented towards excellence and community development to shape future teachers, administrators, research workers and homemakers into nutrition, good health and wellness citizens.
